The Smith family were con artists. Mormonism was a cult. After Joseph Smith died it splintered into a few different cults. The mainstream branch is pretty tame and has about 10 million members around the world. There are a few hardcore fundamentalist sects that are fairly small. The mainstream branch hoards an obscene amount of wealth that has been collected in tithing and they invest it in the stock market. Even most members of the church aren't aware of how much the church hoards vs the small pittance that they dole out in charity, always with strings attached.

I actually read about halfway through the Book of Mormon, and then decided to pray for guidance regarding it's authenticity. The very moment I finished that prayer I was hit with an overwhelming sense that I shouldn't believe a word of it. So even though they were the nicest people you could ever meet, I put that book down and stopped going to their church.
