I'm on GrapheneOS but reality is there will be an increasing number of apps that will be unmaintained like you said, and others you would still need like payments and banking apps that implement the play services API and won't work on graphene for long.
Tap to pay is sth many don't want to just let go it's too convenient for them.
And I estimate more and more websites will just stop working in Chromium based browsers like Vanadium.
The two worlds are splitting at an accelerated rate now.
