The ethics of this hacking are actually fascinating, all sides stuck in moral dilemmas
Blockstream can pay, but no matter what liquid is damaged badly and they will never earn back the money on liquid, they will only salvage some reputation
They can just let the hackers keep the money and let the users eat the loss and immediately save 600 BTC and liquid probably dead either way
The hackers have committed a crime no matter how it plays out from here, but morally, in the eyes of gods and men, they did protect that money, sent back most in good faith, explained the exploit and are negotiating (playing hard ball too) a fair payment. What's fair is always contentious.
And don't say they could have just reported it, how many people reported to cold card and nothing was done?
If you are the hacker, whether blockstream agrees to a price or you just steal it, mostly boils down to if you can sleep at night with what you've done... Because legally they'll come for you both ways
