On August 8, 2013, Lavabit (the encrypted email service used by Snowden) was ordered by the U.S. gov't to hand over its TLS private keys to spy on his communications. Founder Ladar Levison refused. He shut down the service rather than betray his users. One of the very few who chose principles over survival.
