## The 2026 Sovereign Stack
The Sept 2, 2025 Google antitrust ruling didn't break Google's business model.
It broke the lie that "use the default and you'll be fine" was a privacy strategy.
For 15 years the default answer was Gmail, Google Search, Chrome, and Google's AI. The monopoly ruling doesn't make those tools private — it just opens the door for alternatives to compete on the same shelf.
**The 8 layers of the new privacy floor:**
1. **Email** — Proton Mail or Tuta (free tier), not Gmail
2. **DNS** — Mullvad DNS or AdGuard DNS, not your ISP
3. **VPN** — Mullvad VPN or Proton VPN, never "free"
4. **Hosting** — self-host or buy a VPS you actually own
5. **Search** — Kagi ($5/mo) or Mojeek (free), not Google
6. **Comms** — Signal or Session, not SMS or Instagram DMs
7. **Money** — Bitcoin + Monero hardware wallets, not the bank
8. **AI** — Venice AI (private) or local models, not ChatGPT
**What I'd skip (the spicy part):**
- DuckDuckGo — relies on Bing's index, ads route through Microsoft
- "Free" VPNs — if you can't see the business model, you are the business model
- Brave Search Premium — query data feeds their ad tier
- Tor for daily browsing — overkill, slow, draws attention
- "Privacy coins" that aren't Monero — Zcash has had auditability questions
**The boring truth:** privacy isn't a product. It's a posture. The Sept 2 ruling didn't give us privacy. It gave us room to build it.
