I work with asylum seekers. Generally they are adults because the system for children is significantly different for children. Today I met two sisters from Afghanistan. The younger is 17. I can't get over the idea that they have been on the move since the kid was 13. I live with a guy who left home at 13 and crossed the Med, Europe and the Channel.

I don't know why it feels so strange. Maybe it is because I have all my safeguarding training running around my head. I think that it is more something about the dissonance of the situation. How can someone so vulnerable be put through such hell because the British establishment is so racist? It was like the time I saw a young Syrian lad who had been involved in the siege of Allepo and then, having made it here during the long summer of migration, been stuck in detention, playing cheerfully with a stranger's baby at some community event. It doesn't make sense
