There is no gain, imho.
If there's no update it's basically a "ping".
If there's an update it will download a small diff index (just the difference versus your local one).
If you've missed more updates the diff will get bigger multiplied by the number of them.
If you miss 10 updates you'll end up downloading the full index.
App updates downloads will not happen until needed, and under your control.
