With my current iPhone SE becoming inoperable, this post inspired me to choose a new device that had no flicker. Ended up purchasing this TCL one. Will update once it's arrived.

The iPhone 5 topped out at around 500 nits.

The iPhone 18 can hit 3,000 nits outdoors.

That’s roughly ~9,400 lux at the surface

and because it is a traditional LCD with an LED backlight, brightness is controlled mainly through the backlight rather than rapidly pulsing individual pixels.

That means it avoids the 240–480 Hz PWM flicker that became common once Apple switched to OLED starting with the iPhone X

Apple still kept LCD around in the standard lineup all the way through the iPhone 11, even while the X, XS and 11 Pro models had already moved to OLED.

Compare that with the iPhone 17 Pro Max below:

480 Hz flicker. 99% modulation depth.
