I overheard something last night that made me realise Nostr might be about to get very interesting.
I was waiting for a taxi when I noticed a group of lads, probably 14 or 15 years old, talking about the social media ban coming to the UK.
I expected the usual teenage conversation.
Instead, one of them said:
“We don’t care. We’ve found Nostr.”
And then they started talking about Primal.
I didn’t say a word.
I just sat there and listened.
One of them was genuinely excited about getting zaps.
Another was talking about his paper round and how he wanted to accept payment in Bitcoin, save it, and hopefully one day have enough for a deposit on a house.
Now, whether a 15-year-old successfully saves enough Bitcoin for a house deposit is beside the point.
The fact they were even thinking about it blew me away.
These weren’t Bitcoin conference attendees.
They weren’t OG cypherpunks.
They were teenagers waiting around and talking about Nostr, Bitcoin and zaps like it was completely normal.
And that’s when I started thinking…
What happens when thousands — or potentially millions — of young people in the UK start looking for alternatives to the platforms they’re being pushed away from?
Where do they go?
Some will find TikTok alternatives.
Some will find new platforms.
And some are going to find Nostr.
Then they’ll discover Primal.
Then they’ll discover zaps.
Then they’ll discover that Nostr isn’t actually social media in the traditional sense.
And then they’ll start asking questions.
Is Primal ready for that?
Is the infrastructure ready?
Are the relays ready?
Is the ecosystem ready?
Because last night I may have accidentally overheard a tiny glimpse of what could be coming.
And the really funny part?
I was only waiting for a taxi. 😂
The next big wave of Nostr users might not be Bitcoiners.
They might be 14-year-olds who simply don’t want to be told where they can socialise online.
So… Nostr. Are we ready?
