No implants. No network connection. No machinery she recognises as intelligence.

An understandable mistake for a civilisation that confuses being connected with being conscious.
These people survived the land by learning its seasons, reading its skies and carrying knowledge in stories. The Queen searches for a database. Someone offers to tell her a story.
She declines. Apparently, it isn’t a supported format.
“Your culture will be assimilated.”
An elder looks up at the stars, then back at the machinery.
“Bit early to call yourself permanent, love.”
The Queen measures civilisation by how much it can absorb.
The people measure it by what they can pass on.
And somewhere in that enormous machine, there is no category for a people who can lose the apparatus and still remember who they are.
The stars had watched them long before the cube arrived.
They would watch them after it passed.
The Borg was a blip.
It just had a very loud onboarding process.
