I've been online since the early days of the internet. I've used just about every major platform, operating system, and social network over the years.
Lately, though, it feels like something has changed.
A while back I got hit by a sophisticated AI-powered social engineering scam. Now my X account is suddenly sending messages in Chinese. Every month there seems to be a new breach, a new exploit, a new way for bad actors to weaponize technology against ordinary people.
Maybe I'm getting older. Maybe I'm paying more attention.
But it increasingly feels like we're living through a full-scale digital war: bots, AI manipulation, identity theft, phishing, surveillance, deepfakes, account takeovers, and information attacks happening constantly in the background.
The old promise was that technology would make us freer. Today, maintaining digital sovereignty feels like a full-time job.
This is one reason why I find decentralized tools and open protocols so important. We need systems that give individuals more control, not less.
