The drought categories are related to precipitation percentiles. The D4 (worst, and most rare) category is in the 0 to 2 percentile range, expected to only happen once or twice within 100 years. It’s a combination of a persistent lack of precipitation and the associated impacts (soil moisture, stream flow, reservoir/groundwater levels, vegetative stress, etc.). And what worries me is that we are heading into the driest part of the year (September-December), so chances of significant improvement in the short term are not favorable. It will take a lot to get out of this. I’m not a big fan of winter, but this season I will be hoping for good amounts of snow. Otherwise, next spring we’re in for serious hurt and tough water restrictions… ☹️
