The timing matters because autonomous ride-hailing competition is intensifying. Waymo has launched a Las Vegas service, while Tesla and Uber also received commercial permits for Clark County. Those three permits could allow up to 7,000 robotaxis in the area over the next 12 months. Zoox’s vehicles lack steering wheels and pedals, and the company recently received a federal exemption allowing deployment of up to 2,500 such vehicles per year for two years.
