It is hard to see a blessing while you are still bleeding. But I propose that the failure of the BIP-110 fork is exactly that. This weekend tore away a veil. We finally see the battlefield we have been standing on.
We now know the legacy core chain has been captured. It likely has been captured since before BIP-148. Many of us were lulled to sleep. We believed the project was decentralized enough to enact BIP-148, so BIP-110 would give us the same or better results. We were wrong.
That realization is scary. Some of us have years of work stored on this once hopeful medium. Life savings. A legacy we hoped to pass to our children and grandchildren. But knowing the truth early is a relief, not a defeat.
The project still lives. We have two paths. We can store our work on the legacy core chain, which the powers that control the centralized choke points can rug-pull at any moment. Or we can continue a different way, knowing the path forward is truly decentralized in every part of the stack.
We should expect the attacks to continue. They will not stop. But if there is a will to hold onto an exit path from the extrapulatory fiat systems of empires, then names and hashes may change. In the end, our work will be preserved.
This is the optimism I hold. We did not lose. We gained sight. We now know the enemy and where he sits. That knowledge is worth more than a fork that has failed.
I thank Matt Kratter, Bitcoin Mechanic, Luke Dash Jr, and all the plebs on this path with a noble heart posture. They are driven by the noblest of intentions. Their work is not wasted. It is seed.
