Nostr is open, but let’s stop romanticizing it.
No company owns the protocol, true. But somebody still owns and pays for the relays, clients, servers, domains, media hosting, search, notifications, moderation, bandwidth, backups and streaming.
And yes, those operators can still face legal pressure, takedown demands, app-store rules and hosting restrictions.
“Anyone can build on it” is technically true. Economically, that’s a different story.
The bigger problem is incentives.
The people paying to keep this infrastructure running often have little financial incentive to keep doing it forever. If users expect everything to remain free, eventually somebody has to charge, monetize, centralize parts of the service, rely on donations, or shut it down.
Protocols don’t pay server bills. People do.
And the moment you want Discord-style communities, voice, video, streaming, discovery, moderation and a polished UX, Nostr stops being “cheap decentralized social” and starts becoming a real infrastructure business.
Nostr removes permission at the protocol layer.
It does NOT remove cost, infrastructure, legal pressure, moderation, economic incentives or centralization from everything built on top of it.
A protocol can survive while the infrastructure people actually use disappears.
