MI5 chief Sir Ken McCallum has warned Britain must strengthen its defenses against terrorism, saying the country now faces a more complex security environment than it did after 9/11 and that Islamist terrorism remains the UK’s main terrorist threat.

McCallum pointed to the recent conviction of an Islamist extremist who tried to obtain automatic weapons for a planned mass shooting targeting Manchester’s Jewish community. Britain’s terrorism threat level remains “Severe,” meaning an attack is considered highly likely.
