When I renovated one of our bathrooms I did a total gut and found a couple of dead animals in the walls. If you have an old house with balloon framing they can get into the walls. Sometimes you just have to wait it out and hope it was something small.

Occasionally one of our cats lose an outdoor toy in the house and a couple of times the rodents found very clever places to hide before finally succumbing to their injuries. One time I found a dead mouse in one of my fire boots as I was rushing to a call.
