To answer your first question, I believe it exposes a conflict between dharma as public duty & justice toward an individual. Ram's concern for what his subjects think is understandable within the epic's model of kingship(contextualising it), but as a woman I will always argue against it. There have been some women with considerable spiritual agency in Vedas & Upanishads but I won't say ashrams gave them equal status to men. I'm yet to come across that in spiritual literature.
