A workman falling with his scaffold from a high building is seen carving his name in the scaffold as he falls. Later, the ghost of the workman visits the writer who saw him carve his name, and the writer asks him why he would do such a futile thing. The ghost laughs at the writer and says that his name carved in the wrecked scaffold, surely to be burnt as kindling by daybreak, has just as much significance as the writer's works, which will all soon be forgotten too.
