Arulmigu Manakula Vinayagar Devasthanam is the oldest Lord Ganesha temple in Pondicherry(Over 500 years). Local tradition associates the deity with the affectionate title 'Vellaikkaran Pillai' meaning 'White Man's Ganesha' or 'Friend of the Whites' since Pondy was colonised by France. It's believed French authorities made attempts to remove the idol but It kept returning to the same spot. They eventually came to revere & respect the deity, so the story goes. :)
