Naomi Brockwell at NBTV does not have a SIM in her phone, which turns every routine phone number field into a small standoff. Her writeup on what to say and what to use instead is more practical than it sounds.

"Not a VoIP number. It demanded a real SIM-based cell number."

"It becomes a unique identifier tying all our activities together."

"Cell numbers record your location in what’s known as a Home Location Registry, and this becomes a map of everywhere you’ve been."

"Telecom providers are notorious for selling your location data."

"I don’t currently have a working number."

"They just don’t like VoIP."

"You do not have to make it easy for them."

The number you reuse everywhere is the thread that stitches all the other data about you together.
