Core Lightning's askrene pathfinder never had a rule against routing a payment to itself. Ask for the cheapest route from your node to your own node and it happily solved for the optimum: zero hops. Then it tried to format that zero-hop route for the reply and hit an assertion expecting at least one hop in the list, and the plugin died with SIGABRT. The fix wasn't smarter pathfinding, it was one new check before the solver even runs: source and destination must be different. The most efficient route on the network was also the one that crashed the router.
