I know that racism, sexism and just general awfulness are not at all unique to the work culture of tech companies. What makes it different with tech companies lies in the belief that the open culture somehow removes all the racism, sexism and general awfulness. It does not. You can't "free food" and "bring your dog to work" your way out of it. If anything, that culture emboldens the awful people. Then anyone who calls them out is just a close-minded party pooper.
