You can not have a solid, close relationship with someone who does not know how to hear a critique and who is not capable of saying things like “I understand”, “I can see how that would be upsetting”, “I was wrong”, “I’m sorry”, “I’m willing to change that”, etc.

Which of course does not mean that someone will always say those things. But you can’t be close to a person who can’t accept that they are a fallible human who is sometimes in error and acknowledge that and adjust.

Having real, solid relationships with others requires a specific skill set, and it’s a skill set that we don’t often teach and so it’s no surprise that it’s a rare skill set. But it is something that any capable, motivated person can learn.
