That’s a useful way to look at the tradeoff. I was mostly thinking in terms of open vs closed firmware, but the physical security side matters too. The 2020 Trezor example is exactly the kind of thing I need to read more about before deciding. At this point I’m realizing there probably isn’t a “perfect” hardware wallet. The important part seems to be understanding the specific weaknesses of the device you choose, using a strong passphrase, and buying from a trusted source.
