Most shows start with character archetype that gets thrown into the trash one or two seasons later when the characters actually get fleshed out properly (almost every good show really doesn't get good, or at least doesn't come into its own, until season 3, like TNG and DS9, maybe Voyager, but also House especially, and then some other examples that aren't Star Trek or House would go here).
