Two of my favorite mouse reproductive facts:
1. They have the shortest estrous cycle of any animal. Most mammals go into estrus once or twice a year. Other animals like humans are more often (every 28 days). Mice and other small rodents go into estrus every 4-5 days! And within 24 hours after they give birth they go into estrus again and can immediately become pregnant.
2. If environmental conditions aren't ideal, the female mouse can store sperm in their vaginal crypts for a rainy day. A couple of times I've had a researcher come to me confused because a female mouse just had a litter, but she hadn't been housed with a male for a couple of months. I just say "yeah, mice can do that".
