What would’ve Tolkien thought/said/written if ₿itcoin had been around in his time?
I’d like to think he’d recognize the hunger.
A thing that can’t be printed by a tower. Can’t be seized by the Eye. Scarce like gold, but lighter than a ring you can lose in a river.
He’d also recognize the cost.
Forests cut for forges. Energy poured into apparatus so no one has to be trustworthy. Men staring at numbers the way dwarves stared at the hoard.
He’d write the same line he already wrote:
“If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
Bitcoin doesn’t change the sentence. It just changes the metal.
He’d understand wanting something the tower can’t print. He’d still ask what you became while stacking it.
