A bit of personal story - my Father lives in a wooden house in Polish mountains. A few years ago I’ve helped them to buy a air-to-air heat pump which costed ~1k EUR with zero subsidies etc. I was unable to get any usable energy usage statistics from him (he’s a historian, not a nerd) but the heat pump at least keeps a comfortable base temperature of ~18°C in the house even in really cold winter. Previously the only heating they had was a fireplace, which can easily heat up the living room to 30°C but after you stop feeding it overnight, it immediately goes down. When we visited them in winter before the heat pump, the ambient temperature in their living room was around 12°C so they were just sitting in sweaters etc but it doesn’t make any sense. The heat pump solved that and, of course, it also has a cooling function.
