Going through #skybreach and I really need to change a couple character names. Why? Because racism ruins bloody everything.
One character needs to be named for a treasure from lost Earth. My first choice was Chocolate, because that's a hell of a thing to lose forever. But chocolate, cinnamon, lots of other foods have been used to discount marginalized people since forever. So I need a lost treasure that can be a good name, but isn't food and isn't sexualized. I already have someone named Waterfall. (This world will have people named Chocolate, but let's not rub the reader's nose with it, eh?)
The second character is from a feudal society where the people at the top have a lot and those at the bottom barely survive. He changed his name to show his belief that everyone deserves basic dignity, that those at the top are no better than those at the bottom, and that everyone deserves the right to make their own decisions for their life. My first choice was "Liberty," after my great-grandfather, but again, racism ruins everything. Looking for a word that makes sense to change your name to, that hasn't been poisoned by the right.
PS: If your response is "screw it, use racially charged language," save us both trouble and just block me.
