Organized religion is a laggard in human evolution.
Let me be very clear here, I’m shitting on organized religion and not on religious beliefs. I hold some religious flavor beliefs myself.
However, religious organizations are rooted in an ugly past. And of course a lot of thing are! But if we are going to call out other organizations for holding on to ugly old beliefs, as I certainly do, then I don’t think religious organizations should be exempt from our moral standards.
I could walk into any place of worship for any of the Abrahamic religions to ask them about their stance on various topics and there are very good odds that I would be told that being gay is a sin and women are not fit for leadership. Now I imagine that they would use very nice words to say that, but the message would be clear. There are also pretty decent odds that it would be implied that if I do not adhere to these standards, that I am deserving of eternal torture.
It blows my mind that we just casually accept that when we certainly wouldn’t in an organization of any other type.
