"content": "Paper can’t do anything. Writing doesn’t give it magic powers.\nIt doesn’t protect rights. Only people can do that.\nMen with badges generally don’t. They cite the Constitution so they don’t have to. The document becomes the excuse: the taking was lawful, the search was reasonable, the tax was necessary.\nA constitution cannot justify what is already immoral. At best it is wishful thinking. At worst it is the respectable name we give to theft.\nRights survive only where a man already holds a moral standard the paper did not create. Conscience doesn’t need a clause.
