We can get away with this in GrapheneOS to some extent. Linux kernel is mostly C while Android userspace is overwhelmingly Java and Kotlin (interoperable). The best apps for the platform are made with Kotlin, they almost never break with GrapheneOS' protections. For replacing the preinstalled apps they're being converted to Kotlin too.
