Most of the trouble out there comes from people who need to be important.
Which I know is a rich thing to say as a guy posting his opinions on the internet, so take it for what it's worth. But you've seen it. Somebody stakes out a position in front of an audience and then the facts move and they don't move with them, they just go find some angle that lets the old take keep standing, and if you've been reading them long enough you can usually watch them do it in real time. What they're protecting isn't the argument. It's the fact that people watched them make it.
Three years on one side of something, wind changes, now they were always saying this. And the replies don't catch it because the replies were never there for accuracy in the first place, they're there because being on his side feels like being on the right side, which is its own version of the same thing.
Nostr's a little better and I don't think it's because we're better people. It's that there's nobody handing out reach, so the loudest take doesn't pay, and when it doesn't pay people mostly stop doing it.
Anyway I do this too. Which is the whole thing I just spent four paragraphs complaining about and now admitting. Humility is painful.
