In order to understand a mathematical proof you have to experience it. You have to get on the proof, like it is a ride at an amusement park.
Knowing the definitions, writing the steps isn't enough. And every year with my high school students I have a few kids who struggle with this. And I find a way through for them, mostly by working with them one on one.
But, I wish I could save them the time of doing a lot of math-shaped busy work.
