The content provenance problem is today what the double-spend problem was in 2008.

Generative AI has dropped the cost of producing convincing fabricated content to near zero. Nearly every fix on the table is institutional: certificate authorities, platform moderation, editorial gatekeeping. They all verify after the content has already propagated, which means the gap is open before anyone checks. The Nostr developer community is trying to close that gap, confirming through authorship verification who signs a note, who posts the content. Digital ID not dependent on centralized authority creates a durable connection to the source.

Bitcoin solved the structurally identical problem for money, and not with better gatekeepers. It made verification constitutive of the record. A transaction that has not cleared verification did not happen. Record and verification, one event, no trusted third party.

The question I have been building on is: could that same inversion work for content?

I call the design IPFS Sats. It combines content addressing (hashing) for unchangeable identity, something proven to work by IPFS. Bitcoin anchoring for an unforgeable timestamp, something that OpenTimeStamps has been doing for a decade. It uses the Lightning network for instant economic incentive. And a new atomic exchange primitive, AtomicSats, so persistence becomes a market outcome instead of a policy one. If you download something, you have already done the work to support the content creator, because the download is an exchange without a third party being in the middle of the transaction.

I will be precise about where this stands, because this is the wrong crowd to overclaim to. Bitcoin is an existence proof, it has been running for 17 years. IPFS Sats is an architectural argument. A raw design. The torch is aimed, not lit.

Today I found another piece of the puzzle that I have been trying to put together for a quarter century. This blog post brings it all together.
