Imagine that we have had 100 years of walkable cities with integrated public transit, bikes, micro mobility vehicles and so on. City planning has been based on this type of transportation structure, so it basically works.
A few years ago, someone developed large, internal combustion engine, personal SUVs as a form of transportation. In just a few years, they began to take over and shape virtually every aspect of our society, making a few people who owned the car companies rich beyond measure, allowing them to shape politics and society to their will.
The dangers of pollution and climate change and pedestrian/motor vehicle fatalities became headlines and anyone paying attention could see how these things were reshaping society in awful ways, despite providing some measure of utility for some people.
Supporters of this new technology would claim "but internal combustion engine cars are just a tool."
