I have used Za Zen meditation in the past to greatly help my own internal dialogue that at times has been distructive and repetitive. For many people they lack awareness of their thoughts, they are simply subsumed by them. Developing the ability to separate oneself from the stream of thoughts can offer calm and peace from the angst of attatchment to negative thought loops. I have found many benefits from sitting meditation, which for me was less of a spiritual act and more a disciplining of my mind. I have felt brief satori. I once received an unplanned direct transmission from Lama Tharchin Rinpoche that has had lasting impact on my empathy and ability to forgive.
That all said, nothing compares to the eternal love, peace and grace of being saved by Jesus Christ, the son of God through the work of the Holy Spirit.
