The way things were before the op_return increase and, effectively if not precisely, before the inscriptions exploit/bug was discovered. The man who invented/discovered perfect money -- who ought to know more than anyone about the delicate balance of rules and incentives needed to make it succeed -- warned us against putting more than trivial amounts of non-monetary data there. Why should we go against his advice?
