And there’s another contradiction I keep thinking about. In many Indian families, when a woman is nearing childbirth, she goes to her mother’s home for the final months of pregnancy & often stays there after the baby is born. It can be a beautiful source of support but it also says something about our family structures.
After marriage, a woman may build her life around her husband’s family, yet when she becomes pregnant, the person she feels safest with is often still her own blood family.
