Across England this autumn, millions of school children are being offered the flu vaccine, here is what every parent needs to know before they sign the consent form.
It's not free, and it's not needed. Taxpayers fund it for a disease that's mild and self limiting for almost every child who catches it.
The consent letter has no cons. No risk numbers, no contraindications, no alternatives, no real option to say no.
The real UK data says otherwise. Serious harm and death from flu, concentrate almost entirely in infants under 6 months and children with existing serious conditions, not healthy school kids.
The safety file has a hole in it. The main trial found an unexplained rise in infant hospitalisations with the nasal vaccine. The manufacturer admitted it couldn't explain it, then quietly narrowed the age licence instead.
The evidence gets weaker, not stronger, over time. Older trials had real placebo arms but small, shaky results. Newer, more relevant trials dropped placebo controls and blinding altogether. There is no long term safety data.
Follow the money. The company that ran the pivotal trial was bought by the company that now sells the vaccine, while the study report was still being written up.
