Not sure about Europe overall, but it varies heavily in Germany based on which educational track you're on. There are mandatory internships around age 15-16. If you are on a vocational track in secondary education, you may spend 60% of your time in a company.
Experience in a few different jobs, especially in a service business, is really important, IMHO. Good be exposed to what the world has to offer.
