I think it's just a way to let technical divergences play out in a more sane/secure/informed way than with Knots, without producing too much risks for an hard fork.

Personally I'd be up for *really* having multiple implementations building consensus. Naively, I don't think an implementation causing a minority hard fork is all that bad since miners have a huge incentive to fix asap anyway. 🤔
