There is no way. Pain has nothing to do with it. I personally know people who live in poverty, yet mentally they are not ready to be free and "see the benefit in the state and its services."

Both yes and no. There are interesting books on the philosophy and sociology of totalitarianism and submissiveness, and why people at critical historical moments renounce personal freedom in favor of submitting to dictators.
