I Priced a Commercial Battery vs My DIY Build. The Gap Made Me Angry.

I did something most people never do before buying a home battery: I opened the spec sheets of a popular commercial 15 kWh battery and priced every component inside it.

Cells: check. Smart BMS: check. Enclosure, fuse, busbars, display: check.

Then I priced the same components individually, at retail, one by one.

The result? The commercial unit costs more than DOUBLE the sum of its own parts.

💰 WHERE THE MONEY ACTUALLY GOES

  • Assembly and testing — fair, it takes skill

  • Logistics and warehousing — okay, fair enough

  • Marketing, branding and retail margins — this is where it explodes

  • Nothing wrong with paying for convenience. But when the markup is 2-3x, you're not buying convenience anymore. You're funding advertising campaigns.

🔧 WHAT MY BUILD LOOKS LIKE

I assembled a 15 kWh 48V bank from:

  • Grade-A Hitium prismatic LiFePO4 cells (330Ah real capacity, 16S)

  • A Seplos Mason DIY kit: enclosure, smart Bluetooth BMS, 10A active balancer, 400A fuse, LCD display

Total assembly time: one careful afternoon. Total cost: a fraction of retail. Monitoring: cell-level, live on my phone — arguably better than what commercial units expose.

🔍 THE PART NOBODY MENTIONS

The commercial warranty evaporates the day the company does. My pack has no warranty — it has something better: repairability. Any cell, any component, any time, for life. A commercial battery that dies out of warranty is e-waste; mine is serviceable forever.

I'm not saying prebuilt batteries are a scam. I'm saying you deserve to know what the markup buys before you pay it.
